Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students are introduced to a number of artists active in the current audio-visual arts scene, radio pieces, including cinematic works and sound arts with an overview of the historical context of the significance of sound in the arts in the second half of the 20th century.

Course contents:

This symposium consists of panel discussions, film projections and listening sessions. It will discuss tendencies of contemporary sound art in radio and other platforms. What are the terms and practical opportunities of sound art in public radio and other platforms? Where does it fit? The meeting gathers practicioners questioning the perception of „contemporary sound creation“ mainly in broadcasting.

The talks among organizers and guests will be about the phenomenon of sound art in the Czech Republic. The discussion aims at defining its role, place and possibilities of presentation, in order to prepare the space for the necessary mutual feedback between the participants.

Lecturer bios:

Tereza Adámková (b. 1989) studied scriptwriting and dramaturgy at JAMU. She is now in master's studies at CAS at FAMU. During her bachelor's study she interned for a year at the Film Academy in Vienna. In 2011 she completed an internship at the Impakt Festival for the foundation of the same name in Ultrecht, whch deals with innovative audio-visual pieces in an inter-disciplinary context. In 2012 she completed an internship at the non-profit organization Documentary Campus in Berlin. She has directed several short feature films and short documentaries. She has collaborated for many years with Czech Radio for which she has prepared and directed literature and documentary programs.

Johana Švarcová (b. 1983) is a director, actor, improvisationalist and musician. Among her regular collaborators are renowned artists in music, graphic arts, theatre, film and literature. She has studied at FAMU since 2009, first at CAS and now in the master's program in the Directing Dept. She uses a wide variety of technology and media for expression with a large emphasis on auditory forms. She regularly collaborates with Czech Radio as an author and director of radio plays and sound-music compositions. In 2013 she created for Artyčok a series of TV interviews with the title Conversations about Sound. In this series she investigated the diverse approaches of graphic artiists in to sound. In 2014 she worked under the guidance of Martin Blažíček on a research project with the title "The Film Music of Zdeněk Liška. This work became a documentary about oral history and its content is conversations with the collaborators working closely with the composer.

Sara Phinheiro (b. 1985) is a Portuguese sound designer and composer of acousmatic compositions. Her work is usually categorized as multi-channel or radio compositions or gallery installations. She often works with a varying number of speakers in particular positions and in mutual relationships in which the actors are dependent on the listener's imagination. She often works with sound effects, ambient recordings and is interested in conrete music and lives from sound creations for film. She is active in Amsterdam, LIsbon, London and Prage. She works with the Institute for Sonology in Den Haag where she studied as well as in the Center for Audio-visual Studies at FAMU. Sara Pinheiro is a research curator for selecte pieces. Because of her experience with film, acousmatic music and sound arts she will direct the students towards reading, following film/video-art and audio relations relevant for their creation. She will act as a research mentor and symposia curator in the project responsible for technical supervision and documentation. The results of the research will be summarized in an industry article in a review journal.
