master's programme qualification

Specific admission requirements:

A condition of admission is successful graduation from a Bachelor´s programme in the same field.

It is also possible to continue in the Master´s programme after gaining professional experience. In addition to successful completion of a Bachelor´s programme, a further condition is the demonstration of quality in artistic practice. The Faculty reserves the option to impose additional supplementary requirements on candidates from other schools for purposes of evaluating the candidate´s level in subjects where there is a difference in curriculum between the study plans of the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (HAMU) and the candidate´s previous school.

The most important criterion, however, is successful completion of the entrance examination. The entrance examination has the repertory extent of a recital. It must include at least one composition from the common world repertoire (e.g. Mozart, Weber, Koželuh) which is played from memory. Additional compositions are chosen in order to demonstrate the candidate´s suitability for the Master´s programme.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning:

The programme does not have any specific requirements for the recognition of prior learning. The procedure for recognition at AMU is governed by Articles 89 and 90 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 111/1998 Coll., as amended, and by the AMU Attendance and Examination Regulations.

Completed university education in a Bachelor?s programme in Bassoon.

Regulations: The Czech education system is governed by the Act on Higher Education Institutions, as amended (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.), and by the internal regulations of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Field of study characterization

Bassoon is a practically oriented field focusing on the study and systematic mastery of the most demanding instructional and elocutionary literature for the bassoon.

The Master?s programme deepens the circles of curriculum studied at the Bachelor?s level and enhances them in particular with further methodological curriculum. Above all, it develops and systematises skills and findings concerning the presentation of students? own skills within the scope of chamber ensembles, orchestras and solo performances.

Key learning outcomes:

Students will be gradually familiarised with the knowledge and skills required for subsequent artistic and pedagogical practice. The specification remains the area of orchestral playing, chamber playing and soloist activity, as well as in pedagogical erudition for primary and secondary education.

Students must master the entire volume of the world repertoire in both the soloist and chamber areas. The common norm is a requirement of 6 to 8 learned compositions within the academic year. Quality is verified through public performances at departmental seminars, school concerts, contests and national as well as international competitions

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

The graduate must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the world repertoire, and must have mastered all the requirements of soloist and orchestral playing. He or she must be sufficiently prepared for all forms of pedagogical work at the secondary and post-secondary level. He or she must have language skills and the ability to present a musical interpretation in all forms of modern media.

Access to further studies:

The doctoral programme in Bassoon at the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (HAMU), programmes in the arts or education faculties of other universities.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading:

Studies are assessed by credits and examinations stipulated by study plans.

The credit is an ungraded form of assessment of studies. It is allocated upon fulfilment of requirements stipulated for individual subjects and is recorded in the information system with the word „Credited“ (Z). An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subject. Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“. In the main subjects, examinations are administered by a commission.

At the end of the first year, students undergo an examination before a Department of Wind Instruments committee, where they demonstrate their abilities to master the study programme in all its breadth.

Graduation requirements:

The student fulfils the requirements of the study plan and passes the State Master?s Examination.

The State Master?s Examination consists of the following parts:

-the 90-minute Master?s concert and its defence;

-the diploma thesis and its defence;

-the subject of Poetics of Interpretive Performance.
