Specific admission requirements:

Graduation from a Bachelor?s programme in a relevant field.

Course of the entrance examination:

1. A 3-page proposal for the Master?s thesis (must include an outline of the topic, structure and sources, objective and significance of the future academic specialisation).

2. Evaluative exam, a summary of the Bachelor?s programme in three basic areas:

a) pedagogical method in dance instruction;

b) methodology of a selected dance technique;

c) educational systems, personalities, institutions.

Graduates of other universities will prepare a pedagogical demonstration.

NOTE: Candidates from other universities will perform a pedagogical demonstration in the selected specialisation and will present their Bachelor?s work.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning:

The programme does not have any specific requirements for the recognition of prior learning. The procedure for recognition at AMU is governed by Articles 89 and 90 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 111/1998 Coll., as amended, and by the AMU Attendance and Examination Regulations (Articles 8, 14, 18).

Regulations: The Czech education system is governed by the Act on Higher Education Institutions, as amended (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.), and by the internal regulations of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Field of study characterization

The programme?s objective is for students to perfectly master the issues of dance pedagogy in the selected specialisation of classical, modern or folk dance, to deepen practical experience working at various pedagogical levels at primary schools, secondary vocational schools (at conservatories) and in professional ballet (dance) troupes (theatres). Students will elaborate their own personal profile of the top artist, pedagogue and expert in dance and movement theatre which they conceive within themselves.

Key learning outcomes:

Knowledge of issues in the area of the didactics and methodology of individual dance techniques for primary and secondary education; knowledge of and reflection on the major personalities of dance pedagogy and their legacy; orientation in the area of dance schools and other educational institutions and their instructional systems; ability to perceive new trends in dance pedagogy; interaction of dance and other movement techniques.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

A graduate of the continuing Master?s programme in the field of Dance Pedagogy has further developed the education obtained in the Bachelor?s programme, in particular in respect of the selected specialisation in a specific dance technique or style. This involves deepening the student?s practical dance experience and knowledge in the area of didactics and methodology. At the same time, individual profiling of students should have occurred, which is reflected in his or her diploma work. In the area of the theory and history of dance, the graduate will have developed the ability to think critically generally and with respect to dance in particular, and will be familiar with contemporary approaches to the study of dance. A graduate of the Master?s programme in Dance Pedagogy should be prepared to work as a pedagogue at all levels of dance education as well as in the role of a pedagogue and instructor in theatre ballet troupes and professional dance ensembles. It is expected that a graduate will make a distinctive contribution to the further development of dance education.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading:

Studies are assessed by credits and examinations stipulated by study plans. The student is informed of these through the information system. The student registers for examinations using the information system, and is entitled to a second and third attempt to pass an examination. If neither of these attempts proves successful, the Dean may in exceptional cases permit a fourth attempt (administered by a commission). It is not permitted to repeat an examination for the main subjects or to repeat written examinations. The credit is an ungraded form of assessment of studies. It is allocated upon fulfilment of requirements stipulated for individual subjects and is recorded in the information system with the word „Credited“ (Z). An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subject. In the main subjects, examinations are administered by a commission. An examination may be practical, written, oral, or involve a combination of these methods. Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“.

Graduation requirements:

The student fulfils the requirements set by the study plan. The student passes the final state examination. Part of the Master?s examination is the realisation of the graduate pedagogical demonstration and its defence. An additional requirement is the elaboration of a supplemental theoretical written work in accordance with an assigned topic (its defence is also part of the state examination).

The State Master?s Examination consists of the following parts:

- the diploma thesis and its defence (a theoretical written work);

- a discussion and defence of the Master?s pedagogical demonstration;

- an oral examination on the methodology of the selected dance specialisation.
