- Field of study characterization
-
The Bachelor?s programme consists of comprehensive education in the areas of film, television, and digital and computer techniques and technologies, with emphasis on the creative use of the expressive means of the visual component, in particular with a view to lighting, linear, colour and movement solutions for pictorial compositions and specialised tasks of transferring a literary model or script in accordance with the rules of the language of film. The programme is supplemented with general education in the humanities, in the history of the field, and more broadly in art history. Since a digital camera is actually a computer, the Bachelor's programme is also focused on mastering classic computer technology and the fundamentals of digital postproduction methods, colour grading, colour managing and cross-format exports. By completing the programme, the graduate obtains a professional education consisting of the acquired knowledge and skills which qualify him/her to perform all camerawork professions, including that of the main cameraman. The Bachelor?s programme graduate, however, does not take away from his/her studies such compelling documentation of his/her abilities of independent work, for the extent of realised practical work renders this impossible. But the Bachelor?s programme does provide sufficient space for presenting talent and other qualities of the student?s work ethic, which predetermine and justify the student?s advancement to the Master?s level. The programme in the Camerawork Department aims to develop the student?s conceptual camerawork, which is the result of creative intent and lies at the foundation of knowledge and application of the principles governing the relationships between the technical parameters of the film image and the viewer?s subsequent emotional response. Among the prerequisites for realising the artistic intent and ideas of the cameraman as the author of the final version of an audio-visual work?s visual component are the acquisition of technical knowledge, the cultivation of creativity and the development of organisational abilities.
- Key learning outcomes:
-
Graduates leave the school theoretically and practically equipped for qualified performance of the profession and enriched by knowledge in related areas of general culture. In addition to professional, technical and technological knowledge, the cameraman must have the ability to think logically with a reservoir of theoretical knowledge, the ability to think analytically and synthetically, a sense of formal precision, a combined sense and agility of thought, the ability to submit to leading creative tasks and to cooperate on their completion with other creative collaborators ? especially with the director.
- Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:
-
The graduate of the three-year Bachelor?s programme in FAMU?s Camerawork Department is prepared for the profession of cameraman at a high level of craftsmanship and expertise, and is capable of filming documentary as well as dramatic film and television genres. He/she becomes a professional film cameraman, television cameraman, camera panner, sharpener or mobile camera equipment operator, and has mastered stylisation and picture tools. He/she adheres to inspirational influences ? the cinematographic picture versus the artistic work, the performance of camerawork versus the service of a drama. He/she has mastered the technologies of photochemical, electronic and digital cinematography, and also takes from the programme a historical overview of the development of Czech and world camerawork.
