Field of study characterization

The Master?s programme in Scriptwriting and Dramaturgy is focused on the creation and analysis of film scripts. Students study the development of structured dramatic forms, and consider in depth the theme, conception, composition and genre of their works. They concentrate on the technical parameters of creating an audio-visual work, as well as on thinking through what it should be about, why it must be created, and what position it expresses towards the world. During the course of the programme, students have the opportunity to work in workshops under diverse creative personalities and to encounter various conceptions and cinematographic approaches, representing an inspirational spawning of their own development. What is mainly cultivated in the Scriptwriting and Dramaturgy Department?s Master?s programme is not first and foremost the completed script, but rather a mature authorial personality.

Key learning outcomes:

The Master?s programme versatilely cultivates the development of a talented creative personality, who is independently orientated in the contemporary audio-visual and media context and is capable of redefining it through a distinctive artistic act of scriptwriting. The graduate is capable of creating a script bearing the features of original authorial poetics for any film or television format or genre. He/she is also capable of critical reflection on a script and of critical self-reflection. He/she is aware and makes creative use of the stylistic and methodological specifics of a script, in particular as compared to a literary work, as well as of the possibilities of creative or theoretical crossover of scriptwriting and dramaturgy with other artistic or scientific fields.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

The Master?s programme graduate is a versatile creative personality prepared in particular for work in the position of main scriptwriter and dramaturge for longer film and television formats. In view of the transformations on the contemporary audio-visual scene and the mechanisms of production and distribution, graduates apply their skills not only in the ?traditional? position of a scriptwriter for medium-length and feature-length films, but thanks to a wide range of multidisciplinary knowledge and practical skills in film and multimedia, and an openness to develop additional talent and professional aptitudes, graduates also apply their skills with increasing frequency in various technical, production and directing positions, and possibly also creative work in the literary, music or artistic spheres.

If neither of these attempts proves successful, the Dean may in exceptional cases permit a fourth attempt (administered by a commission).
