Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course provides the student with all skills and knowledge needed for playing the English horn. The students acquire a comprehensive view of English horn issues. They acquire knowledge of playing the instrument in general of the potential application of the English horn. Emphasis is place on a gradual comparison of the difference in the playing quality of the students. The weakest must achieve the level which will guarantee them professional application in playing the English horn. The coures literature is from more challenging compositions for this instrument and with piano or orchestra accompaniment. Solo compositions are studied. Mainly orchestral solos.

Mode of study:

On-going participation in symphony and opera orchestra auditions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Course contents:

The English horn is part of many music groups. This instrument is extensively used in orchestras, as a solo instrument and other music genres. This course gradually provides students with all the skills and knowledge needed in playing the English horn. Students receive a complete overview of the issues of the English horn. Students acquire an awareness of playing the instrument in its general potential of application. The education methods view is supported in instruction. Emphasis is plased on a gradual comparison of the differences in the playing quality of individual students. The weakest must achieve the level which guarantees them a professional application of the English horn. The course literature starts with more challenging compositions for this instruments with accompaniment of piano or orchestra. Composition study also includes the main orchestra solo literature. At the close of the course all issues of playing the English horn are reviewed. Also repeated is the overview of orchestra solos and described in the broadest collection of literature for the English horn.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Evaluation of instrument and orchestra playing, completion of the established repertoire, AKS verification, all concluded with the award of credit.
