Learning outcomes of the course unit:

This course provides the student with all skills and knowledge needed for playing the E flat clarinet. The student acquires a comprehensive view of instrument issues. They acquire an awareness of playing the instrument, in a general view of the potential application of the instrument. Emphasis is placed on the gradual comparison of differences in playing quality of individual students. The less proficident must achieve the level which guarantees them professional application. The course literature is from the most demanding compositions for this instrument and with piano, orchestra or other chamber ensemble. Emphasis is placed on orchestra solo literature.

Mode of study:

Systematic stage practice in solo creations, chamber ensembles and smaller or symphonic orchestras. Regular performance in the performance course and playback of individual instrument classes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Course contents:

The E-flat clarinet is an instrument used in many music groups. This instrument is extensively used in orchestras, solos and other music genres today. This course gradually provides students with all skills and knowledge needed in playing the E-flat clarinet. Students receive a complete overview of saxophone issues. They acquire knowledge in playing the instrument as well as a general overview of potential E-flat clarinet use. Their educational method view is supported in instruction. An emphasis is placed on the gradual comparison of the differences in playing quality of individual students. The less proficient must achieve a level which ensures them professional application of the E-flat clarinet. Course literature originates in the more demanding compositions for the instrument, also with piano or orchestra accompaniment. Solo and orchestral solo literature is also studied. At the close of the course all playing issues are reviewed. The overview of orchestral solos is reviewed and E-flat clarinet literature in the broadest sense is described.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Student performance is assessed in all facets of performance. First of all the composition the student played is examined and individual pitfalls of performance are pointed out. Also assessed is how the student dealt with these problems. Noted, as well, is the playing level of the student in terms of technique, intonation, sound, dynamics and performance.
