Learning outcomes of the course unit:

This course provides students with an awareness of orchestral literature and practices the most important solos the orchestra musician may encounter. In all the courses, all composers and their important solos for the clarinet are gradually introduced. This course works with orchestral studies, both domestic and international editions and specialized Czech orchestra parts (ČF, FOK, SOČR, ND).

Course contents:

This course provides students with an awareness of orchestral literature and practices the most important solos. This course ends with a repeating of all of the course literature - Bassoon orchestra parts in symphonic and opera compositions. To best master this course, repetition is the path taken. All compositions in which the Bassoon plays an important solo are repeated. Performance principles of individual composers are reviewed. Playing principles in orchestras and its nature and particulars are reviewed. The course explains what is particular to orchestra playing but also places demands on the musician. Principles regarding intonation for different instruments is taught. This course clarifies principles of tuning with the clarinet, flute, oboe or other instrument. Color intonation, a type of color tuning, is an important aspect of orchestra playing. Playing dynamics in an orchestra has a different nature. For example, solos must be played one dynamic marking stronger than is written, etc. The difference in playing in symphony and opera orchestras is defined and practiced. This course introduces sound samples of various interpretations of the same composition; the approach of the same conductor with various orchestras or the same orchestra with various conductors.
