Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The study aim is to acquire a comprehensive and contiual overview of individual eras in the development of music history, knowledge of the biography of some composers and an idea of the formal forms hidden under the names of some music compositions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of DTH1, DTH2, DTH3. Overview of the historical development of style periods and their markers.

Course contents:

The dance arts are directly linked to music. Particularly tempo, rhythm and also links to melody or other musical elements (phrasing, harmonic expression, etc.) The purpose of this course is to explain the historical path of music and its selected figures in connection with lessons in techique and theory which are in musical expression and historical periods which are inseparable. There is an emphasis on the current status of media used.

b) National Schools: Italy, France, Russia, Austria, Scandinavia, Spain, Poland, Britain

c) The Romance in the Czech lands (national rebirth and developed Romance)

2. The Late Romance and music at the turn of the 20th century.

a) Mahler, R. Strauss, M. Reger

b) Impressionism (Debussy, Ravel, Roussel, Skriabin) and Verism (Puccini)

3. The Paris Six and Stravinsky

4. Music of the first half of the 20th century

a) the Second Vienna School

b) Bartok, Hindemith, Prokofiev, Shostakovich

5.Music of the second half of the 20th century - rise of new composition styles (Stockhausen, Boulez, Cage, Lutoslawsky, Penderecky, and others)

6. Czech music of the 20th century (Janáček, Suk, Ostrčil, J. Křička, B. Martinů, J. Ježek, A. Hába, M. Kabeláč, K. Slavický, J. Kapr, J. Hanuš, J. Rzchlík, K. Husa, P. Eben, etc.)

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on:

a) a test (Romantism and music at the turn of the 19th to 20th century)

b) oral exam in 20th century music, including an overall survey and knowledge of the biography and works of at least two selected composers.
