Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is to acquaint students with the basic procedures and principles of working with history, a range of resources for dance study, institutions, manners of organization and design of a professional study of dance topics.

Mode of study:

Discussion, analysis of writing and other types of sources, excursions, course assignments.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

This course requires a good bearing in historical dance issues, and completion of Survey of the History of Dance and Ballet.

Course contents:

In the first semester students are introduced to variability and manners of analysis using dance resources.Also used, among others, are previous course papers of analyses of selected resources. The Czech situation is compared to the rest of the world. Further students are presented with important collections of dance sources of varying nature, preserved in Czech institutions such as collections of dance programs (National Museum Archives), National Theatre ballet ensemble archives (Archiv ND), printed ballet librettos from various historical periods or dance mementos of the Česky Krumlov state castle archive. During the semester the students are given assignments regarding working with particular sources (collections of sources) related to Czech dance history which require the use of history analysis methods.
