Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Dance instruction focused on the technical mastery of folkdance steps in their basic form.

Mode of study:

Performance of presented dances. Individual variations and whole dances with their variants. Students develop their skills in a dance hall.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Participation in lessons. Creation of a detailed variation of coverd steps and phrases.

Course contents:

Dance steps individually: Each student learns the dance steps, first, individually. Emphasis is placed on precise technical mastery of the given step in all possible manners of execution (straight, in turning, in turns left and right). Steps are performed with various spatial, tempo and rhythmic changes.

Dance steps in various combinations: Mastered steps are joined into a larger whole, so called combination. First, the most simple and then the more technically challenging in a step phrase. Later students create their own step combinations and variations. A further level of step mastery and their variations and combinations is the transfer to a dance in pairs. Pair dance is the basis of folk dance and therefore, great attention is given to this, in theory and in practice.

Step combinations: Hop steps with taps, hop steps with spins in pairs, passing through a bridge and turns in trios in strolls and runs, two-step in a beat polka, Kalamjka taps with polka in turns, two smooth Obkročaks with one polka step, double-step with girl lift, smooth with Obkročák with a change in the turn direction, heel-toe step with Wallachian step, simple elements of Odzemek.

Regional step variations in folkdance: Each step has is own schematic basis. The division and varietz of our folklore regions is made up of technical step execution, typical and diverse for each region. Using examples and comparing differences in some steps we, in class, improve the steps nearing the character and manner of the dance of the given region.

Selected dances of folklore regions: The most typical dances and their variations of each region is selected. In repetition the students try to perfect the performance.

Central Bohemia - Bažant, Zahradníček, Ježek, Šmikuranda, Kalamajka, Maděra, Rejdovák a Rejdovačka, Břitva, Sekyra-motyka.

Southern Bohemia - Doudlebská polka, Přibíračka.

Wallachia - Janošík, Raubčíček, Ševcovský, Odzemek.

Credit is awarded based on: activity in exercises, knowledge of the dances covered and their variations.
