Learning outcomes of the course unit:

1. To introduce the students to the entire process of making a music recording, its processing and final modifications from the perspective of the role of the music director

2. Develop ability to recognize and assess the artistic quality of a music performance

3. Develop ability to recognize sound and artistic quality of a music recording

4. To introduce students to hte development of basic technical principles of sound recording

5. To expand knowledge of music literature in relation to characteristic markings of historical styles and individual styles of composers.

Mode of study:

Presentation regarding issues in sound recording and the work of the music director.

Listening to recordings, analysis of musical performance and recording sound treatment. Comparison of various interpretations and discussions about them.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Listening skills, Extensive knowledge of music theory (harmony, counterpoint, music forms, study of instruments). Ability to analyse a work of music.

Course contents:

Lecture section

1/ Brief history of the technical devleopment of sound recording.

2/ Historical development of music recording execution

3/ Historical devleopment of the music director profession

4/ Brief description of the work of a music director in the studio

Class section

1. Interpretation analysis of important recordings, analysis of their sound concept (character of acoustics of a space, measure of reverb, manners of recording, presence or absence, etc.) Discussion.

2. Comparison of various recordings of the same music, interpretation analysis and sound concept recordings. Discussion.

Recommended or required reading:

Music recordings (CD, DVD,LP, cassette).

1. Key recordings of Czech chamber, symphonic and opera music (ex. Smetana: Má vlast - Talich, Ančerl, Neumann, Smetáček, Bělohlávek, Kubelík, etc.)

2. Important recordings of world music (ex.. historically scholarly recordings of J.E. Gardiner - Mozart: Koncerty pro klavír, Beethoven: Symfonie etc.).

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on these criteria:

1. Overall participation in class discussions

2. A completed semester course paper (comparison of a recording from the viewpoint of performance and the sound concept - comparing at least three different recordings) and the presentation of this in class.

3. A written complete review of at least two concerts or opera performances attended.
