Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Recognition of melodic tone forms (Baroque, Classical, Romance) inlcuding rhythm arrangement. Development in the ability to perceive auditorily complex music phrasing arrangements (melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, formal plan).

Mode of study:

Work at the piano, primarily with the assistance of recordings, in dictation. Working with recordings enables perception of structures in original contexts and simulates music director situations in the studio.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Natural listening abilities. Basic listening and intonation training at the conservatory level (ability to recognize intervals, chords and their inversions, etc.). Basic music theory training (scales, chords, recognizing instruments, forming music phrases).

Course contents:

Practicing the ability to recognize accurately intervals at all levels.

Practicing the abilty to accurately recognize basic triads and their inversions at all levels. Short melody dictations at the piano (themes from classic diatonic works). Working with recordings. Recognizing instruments in an ensemble.

To define by listening the basic character of a recorded sound image (length of reverb, spatial character in which the recording was done, etc).

Recommended or required reading:

Notation material and recordings. Examples from the music literature: Sonata, symphony and other compositions, primarilay from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on: results of a dictation and overall evaluation of the ability to recognize through listening a music structure.
