Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Present to students the music of „other“ cultures and develop skills in structural analysis of selected music exhibits.

Mode of study:

Analysis of audio and video samples, analysis of texts, discussions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Knowledge of the basic music - theory discipline and ability to structurally analyse music of European provenience (for HAMU students) and completion of courses 108ETM1 & 108ETM2.

Course contents:

The lectures provide an overview and basic orientation in music events outside the framework of European artificial music. The course deals with the music of natural nations, music outside of European high culture and folklore of European nations. The instruction is focused primarily on listening experiences in music of various world cultures with an emphasis on an analytical approach and cultivation of abilities to understand the principles of music thought also outside of the European music paradigm. Part of the instruction is also probes into history and methodology.
