Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Lecture on higher music theor issues. Basic topics: Introduction to Music Theory, Music Theory Classification and Analysis, Applied Music Theory, Research in Music Theory Classification and Analysis. The aim is to prepare Music theory professionals with perspectives for application in Musicology and Education.

Mode of study:

Contact instruction. Lectures over complex music theory issues. Critical comparison of texts and applications of analyses of selected music structure examples.

Polyphony

- Definition of polyphony

- Structure and basic issus in the traditional study of polyphony

- Polyphony and harmony

- Vocal, instrumental and modern polyphony

- Imitation and imitation techniques

- Counterpoint transposition

- Canon and its issues

- Counterpoint forms

- The tonal plan in the Baroque polyphony phrase, its tectonic function

- Counterpoint technique in 20th century music

- Significant works about polyphony

Introduction to music analysis

- Aims and methods of music analysis

- Music structural analysis

- Music language analysis

- Melody analysis

- Harmony analysis

- Tectonic analysis

- Introduction to Schenker's analysis

- Important works in the area of practical musical analysis.
