Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The main goal of the course:

- Enter into the world of props and things.

- Provide students with a view into the world of masks in their entire history and breadth.

- Enable students to get to know the fundamental froms and types of puppets and their use.

The purpose of the work is primarily a joint quest finally for the place and sense of mass elements as bearers of significance and communication in behaviour - drama and a basic understanding and comprehension of creative quality - aesthetic function in the theatre and drama.

Mode of study:

Contact instruction. Production. Discussion. Analysis of recorded theatre production. Readings. Text analyses. Participating in small etudes with props and eventually in a staging where there is work with a mask or puppet.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

- Interest in working with props and puppets.

- Sensitivity towards various types of material.

- Introduction to some performances in which a prop, mask or puppet is worked with.

Course contents:

This course offers a trip down the road under the surface of our usual view at the subject which may become an effective theatre tool.

I. OBJECT:

- Introductory step into the world of things.

- Concurrent reflections, in work, upon the material - mass.

II. MASKS:

- The mask as the oldest human play prop.

- Varous types of masks.

III. PUPPETS:

- Puppets as non-living mass symbols.

- Puppets and characters.
