Learning outcomes of the course unit:

- Introduce the main phases of theatre arts.

- Introduce changes in theatre language and changes in the function of theatre.

- Expand student perception of texts, motivation structure, theme, composition and language.

- Teach how to analyse a text and conceive it in relation to various theatre productions in individual historical stages.

Mode of study:

Readings, moderated discussions, discussion, Theatre production media recordings, text analyses.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

- General knowledge of Czech and world literature and drama in particular.

- Analytical, interpretation and review skills.

- Creativity.

Course contents:

Origin and basis of theatre.

Antique theatre; changes in theatre, its types and functions, sources of later inspiration.

Theatre Celebrations: organization, audience, space, actors, music and dance, costumes, make-up; Helenistic and Roman theatre; today's staging of the antique.

Medieval theatre and drama; Carneval, folk culture and theatre.

Types of Italian theatre and drama from the Renaissance; theatre space, stage sets.

English theatre and drama; theatre professionals; Shakespeare.

Spanish theatre and drama; Relgious and educational theatre; The Baroque.

French theatre and drama 1500-1800; origin, endurance and changes in style.

German theatre and drama and its reforms; the national theatre phenomenon (the function of the dramaturg).

European theatre and drama from 1800 to the beginning of modern theatre; artistic vs popular theatre (from Romantism to Realism). Forms of realistic drama; illusion theatre.

The Great Theatre Reform (from Wagner to Moderism); New drama and theatre set design. New means of expression, the theatre artist, director; illusion and non-illusion theatre.

Inter-war and Post-war years of European theatre. The Avand garde, epic theatre, existentialism and absurd drama.

The Second Theatre Reform; new social relationships, repertoire and alternative theatre.

Changes in acting and direction in the 20th Century, Stanislawsky, Mejerchold, Brecth, Grotowski (and others).
