Learning outcomes of the course unit:

1. To introduce students from all studies to the most elementary knowledge of theatre theory through a presentation of traditional Czech theatre-theory terminology.

2. To introduce concepts through a detailed semantic analysis of individual terms and if possible in the most broad and subtle contexts, synchronic and diachronic.

3. To introduce the contemporary, relatively applicable, semantic meaning of a given concept, and what manner, today, it is possible to learn and identify certain aspects of theatre issues.

4. To introduce historical concepts - where they came from, which „school“ or person introduced it into theory and what importance and functional changes during the entire history it has gone through.

Course contents:

1. Concept of theatre semiotics (Pierce types of signals (ikon, index, symbol) and symptomatic layers of theatre language).

2. Concept of theatre language.

3. Terminology of the Zich Aesthetics of the drama arts.

4. Theatre theory concepts of Czech structuralism.

5. Components of a theatre work.

6. Components of theatre works.

7. Theatre interpretation and non-interpretive theatre.

8. Mis-en-scene.

9. Directing, dramaturgy.
