Learning outcomes of the course unit:

To introduce students to principles which determine the form of theatre in various historical stages and, as well, provide them with a societal and artistic context, the position and function of theatre within it.

Mode of study:

Presentation, screening relevant audio-visual excerpts.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of Theatre History I 1,2.

Course contents:

Theatre in the context of the development of Western culture 1 is intended for all first year students in all DAMU studies. The content of the lectures is to introduce the basic features of the developmental phases of European theatre from antiquity to Classicism. Experts in each phase give lectures.

1. Realism and Naturalism (the characteristics of artistic trends, influence on the development of theatre and drama, theatre, playwrights and works (Russia, Germany, Italy))

2. Edward Gordon Craig and A. Appia and theatre reform (directing, set-design, acting).

3. Henrik Ibsen and modern theatre (characteristics of the creative stages, pieces).

4. August Strindberg and modern theatre (characteristics of drama, works).

5. A.P. Chekov (characteristics of works, genre divisions (acts, early plays, „The Great Four“) and influence on modern theatre and drama).

6. K.S. Stanislavsky and MCHT (modern theatre a the turn of the century, rise of MCHT, psychological realism methods).

7. Expressionism and Neo-Romantism (concept characteristics, influence on modern theatre, drama and directing - Max Reinhardt and Leopold Jessner, Otto Brahm, authors and pieces).

8. Sumbolism (concept characteristics, limits of Romantism, Realism and Naturalism).

9. Symbolism in French drama and theatre (ensembles, playwrights, plays, French symbolism and the poetics of Alfred Jarry).

10. Russian modern and Avant-garde (characteristics and concept definition, playwrights and pieces, inter-war avant-garde and directing and acting reform).

Grades and award of credit are dependent upon the sitting of the exam in the time period discussed: the exam is written (oral for appeals) and checks the mastery of the material at the level at which they were presented. Additionally, knowledge from the prescribed required literature (trade publications and drama texts) and a good bearing in wider European Social Relations (repectively, in the context of Western culture).

The Dept. of Theory and Critique announces a list of three regular and two make-up dates.

The exam is over the lecture and list of readings and will be only an oral exam.

The student is required to register for one of the three listed regular exam dates.

The second make-up exam date is in the presence of two instructors.

Students who are registered who do not sit and have no excuse are given a grade of „X“.

Students who do not register for any of the regular date are automatically given a grade of „X“.

If as student does not pass in regular or make-up dates, they may request a Dean's date which is a commission exam.

If the registered student does attend the exam (only for extenuating circumstances), they are to at least one day prior to the exam to apologize to the examiner"
