Learning outcomes of the education:

Motto:A FAMU graduate is not usually a researcher and scholar. In ETDs the work should proceed scientifically, without omitting the muse.

The seminar introduces the basic principles of academic writing. How to define the theme of theses (ETDs), what the methodology will be; how to formulate hypotheses; how the hypotheses is proved or disproved; how everything is neatly summed up at the end. In addition, the course defines the initial searches and introduces the state of research in the field. Further the course discusses the basic genres of a scientific text. The seminar serves as an introduction to the original requirements for theses, that is, the principles of scientific work emanating from the scientific method. The course brings the students to the basic topics of the philosophy of science in relevant historical excursions, as well as the divisions of humanities, natural or social. Aside from theoretical findings the course provides empirical knowledge of the authors of theses as a purely practical or psychological in nature. Part of the course are homework assignments (often writing).

Mode of study:

The course is a combination of interactive lectures and individual consultations which are to reinforce essential skills in writing higher-education institution qualified papers. This combination is to create the prerequisites upon which individual FAMU departments will build in their courses devoted to qualified writing.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Basic knowledge and skills acquired in the to date study at FAMU (ex: course papers for individual subjects). Course participants are to have a basic awareness of language style function (from the artistic through administrative to professional), working with sources and bibliography. An addtional requirement is participation in class in which participant ideas on topics, aims and concept of the bachelor's or master's thesis will be discussed. These will be discussed in breadth.

Course contents:

1.) We, are surrounded by the methods of science, the method of scientific practice and the scientific method or science is all around us. Scientific approaches in audio-visual pieces. Audio-visual pieces in science. How to remove possible psychological barriers to science and scientific methods? For example, how to write ETD with enthusiasm.

2.) At the beginning are wonder and bewilderment or investigating the common roots of arts and sciences. Defining the basic concepts „methodology of science“ or „method of scientific practice“. How has science changed? How to understand research methods and their changes? Wonder and bewilderment towards scientists and methodic challenging of everything, about which it is possible to challenge....

3.) The rise of audio-visual pieces on the one hand and final EDT on the other or investigating context and contradiction. Considerations of genre, intermeshing of genres, path from detail to a whole and back, underestimating research as the main cause of the belief that I am original and the first.

4.) Main principles of publishing ethics. Originality and origin of thought in the „information obesity“ era. To cite is not a weakness! What is precise citation all about? Understanding the logic of annotations and references.

5.) I, the challenger! Critical thought as a gift, not a burden. How to take the role of the challenger to one's own work. Necessity of distance from one's work or the judgement of the challenger does not harm, but helps. The role of the scientist and the challenger of the EDT. How to defend the final thesis?

6.) Formality as an administrative onus. Formal requirements of the EDT and how to fulfill them. Formal adjustments as one of the requirements for readablility and comparison of the works of independent university graduates. Multimedia and EDT.

7.) Individual consultations on partial tasks and final results of the methodology classes.
