Course contents:

We wish to substantiate that the script is primarily the first form of a film and secondly - not at all superfluous - a work of literature. To place film among other art disciplines, to point out the mutual relationships and their consequences in working on a film. To recognize the film form, principles and potential of film language as early as the script. To direct attention to the potential of formal processes in taking part in the particulars of a film narration of a story.

In other words - to not doubt the importance of a story and it psychological interpretation, dramatic gradation of intrigue, etc. - to direct attention to the particulars of formal film processes in which film narration creates nuances and expand its emotional impact and importance.

This course, in principle, is comprised of „lectures“ in which terminology and rules are used and from debates. In this role, the students question or broaden the aforementioned priniciples or rules according to their own opinions or experience. I presume a particular approach by students from various studies, no only scriptwriting students. I welcome debate, supported by the student's own practice.

Graded will be the knowledge of concepts and principles, but most of all the ability to apply them in practice, generalize and recognize relationships in the view of a film piece, that is filmmaker practice.

Recommended or required reading:

Monaco, James: How to Read a Film, Oxford University Press New York 1978 (FAMU Library, sign. 6B1847) - or the German version of the film Verstehen, Rowohlt 1995.

Lotman, Jurij Michajlovič: Semiotika filmu a problémy filmovej estetiky, skripta VŠMU Bratislava 1984. (Available at KSD.)

Assessment methods and criteria:

Graded will be knowledge of concepts and principles and primarily the ability to apply these in practice. Ability to generalize and recognize relationships in the viewpoint of a film, or filmmaker's work.
