Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Acquaintance with various screenwriting approaches in creating an original feature-film script or literature adaptation into a feature film. Potential and methods of understanding film narratives through figures, environments, situations, development of plot, working with collective memory, distillation of personal experience, multiple narrative lines, multiple main figures, etc.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Actively working in parallel with the current scripwriting workshop. This course is also includes visits - obligatory - of registered students to scriptwriting workshops lead by the instructor and, as well, is open for those interested in particular (Jarchovsky) scriptwriting workshops in the students register.

Course contents:

Lecture combined with creativity classes. Various methods and creative steps in creating a film or TV script using the personal experience of the lead instructor. Instructionis based on examples and samples 1) from scripts by the lead instructor and films arising from them, 2) based on creative scriptwriting steps of other significant film pieces. (ad 1) Pějme píseň dohola, Šakalí léta, Pelíšky, Musíme si pomáhat, Pupendo, Želary, Horem pádem, Kráska v nesnázích, Medvídek, U mě dobrý, Kawasakiho růže, Občanský průkaz, Nevinnost, Líbánky, Klauni, Zahradnictví, Učitelka. (ad 2) the works of M. Forman, W. Allen, R. Altman, F. Fellini, I. Bergman, M. Leigh, J. Menzel and others that have had an influence on the works of P. Jarchovsky. Further, the course is based on Jarchovsky''s experience as a dramaturgist for Czech Television where he investigated material by graduates or students:Hotel Čtvrtá hvězda, Případ pro exorcistu, Amerikánka, Sudety, Kobry a Užovky, Vymalováno and others..

Assessment methods and criteria:

75% attendance, active in discussion, analysis of selected examples.
