Course contents:

The aim of the module is to provide students with a comprehensive view of contemporary world festival pieces. What are the festivals in Berlin, Venice and Cannes like? What trends define them. What artists have cultivated the festivals? What festival films have the greatest expectations? What films for particular filmmakers and nations are in a historical context?

The module is comprised of three sections:

Section One - Introductory Lecture - Friday, 7.10.2016 - 10:00 - FAMU

Dramaturgy film review Be2Can, Aleš Stuchlý and Vít Schmarc acquaint students with the most interesting films that came up at this summer and last year at festivals in Venice, Berline and Cannes. Individual films and artists are presented. Tomáš Pavlíček's lecture supplements this with observations from the festival in Locarn. The lecture lasts roughly one class hour and will take place at FAMU and at the close will have time for discussion.

Section Two - Lectures from the Be2Can Focus series

Students select, according to their interest, one of the lectures from the Be3Can Focus series which take place in the small hall at Kino Lucerna.

Friday, 7.10.2016 - 16:00 - Modern Asian Cinematography

It is no so long ago that the international public applauded the films of Park Chan-wook, Takesiho Kitana or Tsai Ming-Liang. In the last few years it seems that the Eastern Asian film have fallen from the festival fields. About this and why and what the contemporary Asian film scene is will be speculated about by the film publicist Antonín Tesař (Cinepur, A2) in connection with the screening of films by Hirokazu Koreeda and Hou Hsaio-Hsien, which are on the Be2Can3 program.

Saturday, 8.10.2016 - 14:45 - Round table - Cannes

Panel discussion of important Czech critics, distributor and festival representatives about the most important international film festival.

Sunday, 9.10.2016 - 16:00 - Work by the Dardenn Bros. - Moral imagination in movement

The films of the Dardenn brothers have been for twenty years a complete revelation: in a gripping realistic form they investigate the foundations of man through aggravating situations which are based on particular social conditions. Each fundamental feature of their directing style, balances, with virtuosity, material import and spiritual overlap. This is the focus of the lecture by the Be2Can dramaturg, Aleš Stuchlý.

Section Three - Film screening

Students view one of the films presented in the review. On Friday, the lecture on Asian cinematography is directly connected to the screening of the film Assassin. On Sunday after the lecture on the Films of the Dardenn brothers, there is a screening of the film Two Days, One Night. Students may, of course, choose any other film from the entire Be3Can review.

In the module students have free admittance to these films:
