Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students learn to depict one or more figures in capturing their work, or possibly a family background - in a historical context and a psychological presentation of their performance.

Mode of study:

Students find and interesting person, consults with the instructor about the significance of the person, which they wish to portray and finally the main features (while respecting the technical shooting limitations) capturing the material and undergoes further discussions with instructor in selecting shots for the film which is then edited.

Classification deadline: Summer semester submitted by 5, Sept. to the Documentary Dept.

Screenplay deadline: end of the Winter semester (January)

Completion deadline: February-August

Shooting technology: 16mm (or DV cam), contact sound

Footage: about 15 minutes

Material: 610m 16mm B/W negative, daily work (or 3x DV cam 60 cassettes)

Sound material: mg 16mm for transfer to mix 220m; 2x 60' DAT; 1x S-VHS and VHS; 1x CD-R

Image technology: Sound camera 10 days (AATON LTR, ECLAIR ACL) and silent 16mm camera 5 days (or 15 days DVcam)

Sound technology: DAT FOSTEX PD-4, or NAGRA IV - 15 days, or mixing table extended (DV technology)

Editing: 40 freq. Avid Express DV, including setting sound and log for sound post-production

Sound Post-production: selection and statement transfer, music and background noise, or 2 freq. commentary recording; preparation and setting of mixing tracks - digital sound editing facility 2 freq.; digital mixing facility, facility 2 freq; transfer of mix to master

Transfer: 16mm negative - DV cam, DV cam - VHS and DVD, DVcam - S-VHS with TC

Archiving: (16mm two-track or also kk - NFA), DV cam - FAMU Studio, VHS and DVD - Documentary Dept. Video library.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No requirements.

Course contents:

Group exercise of the Documentary Dept. 2nd year bachelor's study. The film portrait may combine documentary elements with stylizations.

Recommended or required reading:

The study material, regarding a significant public figure is the work. Otherwise, it is possible to study any persons activity dealing with such by interviews and observance which is used for an understanding of the psychology of the depicted person.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is acquired based on successfull presentation and defense of a film.
