Course contents:

The aim of the module is to acquaint students with the developmental phases of the Documentary Film Dept. from 1961 to 2002 in the context of the history of FAMU and political events of the discussed years. Particularly, emphasis is place on a presentation of the fundamental educational concepts of documentary film instruction, their changes and presentation of key figures in the Dept's. history. Each discussed development phase a sample film will be shown and analysed.

10:00-13:00 - Conditions for the rise of an independent department at FAMU. Production organization for film practicals. The presentation is supplemented with examples from the film Není stále zamračeno 1949 (dir. Karel Kachyňa, Vojtěch Jasný).

14:00-17:00 Basic Idea for the rise of the studies: Film publicity and documentary film. Screening of first extant student films: Silná pěst 1963 (dir. Petr Obdržálek), Záchytná stanice 1963 (dir. Voody Vašulka), Atomový Bach 1965 (dir. Eva Horská), Zelený horizont 1965 (dir. Tibor Podhorec), Dilema 1966 (dir. Jan Boněk). Televizní cvičení: Noc s Krausem and Sýkorou 1966 (dir. Allan Charles Edgar).

10:00-13:00 Start and wane of normalization attitudes at the Documentary Film Dept. Examples from graduates' films: Black and White 1968 (dir. Vishwanath Krishna), Teprve 1968 (dir. Jan Boněk), Naučit se bát 1971 (dir. Pavel Štingl). Projekce filmu Člověčina 1974 (dir. Fero Fenič) a Schopen, odveden 1979 (dir. Petr Nikolaev).

14:00-17:00 Original film at the Documentary Film Dept. Real changes in the education mechanism and fundamental ideas. Example from films: Jak zvýšit odolnost člověka 1983 (dir. Thaisavath Sythong) and Srdíčko 1988 (dir. Filip Renč), ELFilm 2001 (dir. Jakub Sommer), screening of Deník těhotné (period) 1998 (dir. Vít Janeček).

Recommended or required reading:

In-class film screenings.

Assessment methods and criteria:

90% attendance and participation in class + writing (1000-3600 characters), in which the student formulates what period in the history of the department the student finds important and why.
