Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the function of the film lab, its incorporation into the cinematography technological production processes, production process in the film lab and the equipment used for processing film material and producing film copies, or other film lab products.

Přednášky zpracování filmopvé suroviny s ukázkami různých typů filmových surovin.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Knowledge of the basics of photography, principles of cinematography and material from technology lectures in the „Camera“ 1st study year.

Course contents:

Description of individual lectures:

1. Topic - The film lab, first introduction

Circumscription of the film lab, its mission, its inclusion into the cinematography production process. pre-production stage, peculiar shooting and finishing work. Supplementary activities.

Presumed knowledge: basic idea about the processes in cinematographic production and its technical basics.

2. Topic - The film strip (1)

Raw material, description, structure, brief history of production and use of film material, film stock, sensitive layers, functional principles and film material processing.

Presumed knowledge: Basics of photochemical photography principles, fundamentals of cinematography, material from the previous lecture.

3. Topic - The film strip (2)

Film strip dimensions and formats, division of cinematographic professional materials, film tagging and directly on the strip. packing and storing of raw and processed film material. Rules for working with film.

4. Topic - Film copy production technology (1)

Working with 35mm film, original and duplicate negatives, film copies, duplication processes, reasons for duplication, basics of proper duplicaiton, material used in duplicating film

5. Topic - Film copy production technology (2)

Working with other formats, tranferring formats, reduction processes, enlargement, aspect ratios for 16mm, practical use of various film formats.

6. Topic - Film lab working processes (1)

The pre-production phase, daily work, numbering the daily work, cleaning films, alternative manners of completing daily work, working on film recordings.

7. Topic - Film lab working processes (2)

Technical editing, negative registration, basics and processes in editing negatives, physical and virtual servers, processes in classical and electronic artistic editing, use and processing of time codes and Keycodes, rules for joining film strips

Presumed knowledge: Basics of photography, cinematographic principles, previous lecture material.

8. Topic - Film lab working processes (3)

Production of the first copy, enumeration and countervailing, countervailing copy, example copy, securing the original negative, effects lab practice, approval processes, mass copy production, archiving film works

Presumed knowledge: Basics of photography, cinematographic principles, previouse lecture material

9. Topic - Film lab machines and equipment (1)

Spooling table, frame scanner, film cleaners, splicers and cutters, developing equipment, a short history, developing machines

Presumed knowledge: Basics of photography, cinematographic principles, previous lecture material.

10. Topic - Film lab machines and equimpent (2)

Copying technology, film copy types and their use, film copy exposure automatics, copying points and their system and structure, color analyzers

Presumed knowledge: Basics of photography, cinematographic principles, previous lecture material.
