Vojtěch Jasny bio:
In 1951 he completed studies at Prague AMU where he studied at the Film Faculty, photography and photography technique with Prof. Karel Plicka, whom he also assisted. In the 1950s he worked on Czechoslovak military films. During his work on military films he was awarded the Military Kontrarozvedce. [2] With his classmate, Karel Kachyň, at the beginning of the 1950s he shot several interesting docmentaries and his first feature-film „Tonight Everything Ends (1954). His first independent film was “Desire„ (1958). His greatest success and which brought him general popularity was the legendary film “Until the Tomcat Comes„ in 1963. His last film in the 1960s was the treasured “All Good Parents" in 1968.
After the August invasion of 1968 he was politically persecuted and eventually emigrated and shot TV and feature films in Austria, Federal Republic of Germany, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and later in Finland, France, Canada and the USA. He shot 29 films abroad. As of 1984 he has resided permanently in the USA. He is a university instructor who has taught in Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and New York. Also he has taught at the New York Film Academy where his extensive private library is kept. He has instructed a number of successful students who continue to mention his name.
After the Velvet Revolution he return in the 1990s to his homeland to shoot in 1991 the film „Why Havel?“ and in 1999 his final feature film „Return of Paradise Lost“. He regularly returns to his homeland and participates in film festivals and has received many awards. In 2011 he took up residence with his ill wife in a retirement home in Bystri. Upon the passing of his wife (in Jan. 2012) he moved from the retirement home to a private residence. He now lives in Přerov.
He is the author of Books of Memories and Lectures about film „Life and Film“. He is the scriptwriter of a new film which is to take place in Terezin [3] which has not yet been completed.
Awards:
In 1969 „All Good Parents“ as awarded at the International Film Festival in Barcelona. For his works he has received awards in Cannes, San Sebastian, Berlin, Buenos Aires, New Dehli and many others.
In the Czech Republic at AFO 2003, Mr. Jasny recieved an award for lifetime contribution to Czech film. In 2007 he received the Czech Lion award for his long-time artistic contribution. In May of 2013 he was awarded the honorable tile of Doctor of Honors Causa for the Artistic Board of JAMU in Brno. In 2013 he received the Karlovy Vary President's award for contribution to Czech Cinematography. He has received the Crystal Globe and also in 2013 the Annual Award of the ACFK for the profound humanity imbued in his films, for his philosophically inspiring perception of the world, strong moral character of his stories, exceptional visuality and endless desire for right and justice, which permeates not only his cinematography but also his life.
