Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Introduction of the students to the potential of modern cameras, understanding of teh world around us through a camera viewfinder. Learn to master modern technical camera accessories. Theory knowledge regarding camera movement acquired in the course and ability to apply it in practices through practical experience with the same camera technology.

Mode of study:

Exercises with camera technology at the Vantage company.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Technical talent and theoretical knowledge in camera techniques. Knowledge of optics at the primary school level. Fundamental knowledge of capture in kinetic photography demonstrated in discussions of talent.

Course contents:

1. Course Description (Lectures/course)

- What the course is about:

- Theory and practical introduction to camera technology

- Theory and practical introduction to movment techniques

- There are many reasons why to move and not move a camera

- Function and difference between changing of the visual angle in zoom, camera travel, camera, crane

- Influence of hand cameras

- Steadycam

- Camera angle change with hand cameras

- Monitoring the image through the film camera viewfinder

- Preparing a shot for a travelling camera

- Reaction of the cameraman to actor movement

- Reaction of the cameraman to music, dialogue in connection relation to camera movement

- Camera movement through so-called, Motion Control (ex. MILO) for effects shooting

- Pedagogical methods and means:

- computer video projection

- field catalogues

- discussions of opinions on a given topic

- analyses of individual shots

- theory preparations

- personal experience from practice

- practical exercises with the equipment and it potential

- Aim and purpose of the course

- The purpose and the practical exercise are to introduce the students of the 1st and 2nd study years to the potential of the modern camera. Through the viewfinder the students learn to understand the world around us. This view through the professional camera itself teaches how to form various interesting compositions, actor images, views of surrounding exteriors and interiors within the kinetic limits of the modern camera. This is in relation to various movement equipment from the classis static system, the dolly through cranes and remote controlled cameras. These opportunities at the same time introduce modern camera accessories.

2. Tasks:

- type and extent of tasks

- 1st year - Summer semester

- introduction of students to the types of cameras, statives, stative heads and dollies for camera travel

- mastering the aforementioned equipment

- Clarification of the reasons why and how, in some situations, to move the camera and vice versa (why not to move)

- monitoring the shooting underway through the camera viewfinder on a matrix.

- movment of a camera on a stand on a camera dolly in practical exercise

- 2nd year - Winter semester

- Continuing the introduction of additional camera equipment: R.C. crane, telescopic crane, Motion Control - MILO, Chapman, Fisher and Panther dollies, and others

- camera movement on a profi-dolly, R.C. crans and others

- a short survey of other movment equipment (helicopters, special stabilizers and others)

- shot preparation for those types of movement equiment ahead of time in the technical script

- changes in camera angle with a hand camera

- connecting camera movement with zoom

- Camera movement connected with music, dialogue (travelling, crane, zoom)

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on the initiative of the student in exercises in the Vantage company (Camera rentals). Of course, also on attendance - min. 75%.

Otherwise course papers will be individually assigned from a selection of two topics.
