Learning outcomes of the course unit:

This course introduces the basic trends of Czech and Czechoslovak history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Instruction focuses on the period of the formation of the modern Czech political nation, the period of political and cultural emancipation. Chronologically, instruction is limited to the years from 1848-1989, from the first real attempt at a constituted constitutional life in the Austrian Empire to the fall of the totalitarian system in Czechoslovakia. Roughly 1/3 of the presentation will be devoted to topics related to development prior to the rise of independent Czechoslovakia, the rest to modern Czech-Slovak history. The aim is to acquaint students with the basic concepts and events in Czech and Czechoslovak hisotry and point out the links to general history, events in cultural history or the arts. Instruction will be in lectures and topic classes in which the students demonstrate the ability to work with professional writings and work independently on a subject topic.

Instruction through lectures and classes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Students should know topics in Czech and Czechoslovak history at the high school level. Also necessary is the ability to work with professional writings and historical resources.

Assessment methods and criteria:

The student is graded on participation in lectures and classes. The student is also required to write a paper (essay, review, etc.) and pass an oral test. Participation in instruction makes up 30% of the grade, level of knowledge in the oral exam, 70%.
