- Learning outcomes of the course unit:
-
Students learn to deal with the specificity of a place. They confront questions on how to photographically represent what they percieve and develop their own photographic language.
- Mode of study:
-
workshop
- Prerequisites and co-requisites:
-
Work independently, inquisitive spirit, eager to research and a strong desire in the artistic use of images.
- Course contents:
-
The workshop starts with a walk through Prague’s shopping streets and –centres.
Which economical, political and social interests define these spaces? Which history do they tell us? What can we see and what stays unseen? Which images and texts do we see? Which every day life is lived and experienced here?
How do I perceive these places? How do I behave, how do I move and how do the others move? How does this influence my perception?
In the course of this workshop we will examine the specificity of these consumer spaces and ask ourselves how to visualise them through the medium of photography.
We will not only question the process of searching a picture and the act of photographing these spaces, but also the ways of dealing with the photographed or collected images.
First we observe, note, research and photograph. At the end of the workshop, each student will conceive an artist publication in DINA4 format based on the collected material.
- Recommended or required reading:
-
Essays on photography and photographic artist’s books that will be presented during the workshop.
- Assessment methods and criteria:
-
To be assessed is the thematic approach of each student to the character of consumer spaces. Half way through the workshop, she/he will present the outline of her/his insights. This can take form in different ways, for example a collection of notes, facts, photos and other visual material. Not only the content, but also the ways of dealing with the collected material are crucial.
The other key element in the assessment is the artist’s publication in DinA4 format that every student designs based on her/his photographs (and other material) at the end of the workshop. The student should understand the specificity of the publication medium and should know how to translate her / his image material within the framework of a bookwork.
