Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The creation of complex structured documents. The basics of book graphics with special emphasis on photographic publication, art books and advertising catalogues. The production of individual book artifacts.

The following will be taken into consideration with regards to the final grade: creative approach to the theme, ability of critical reflection of one?s own work, technical perfection.

Course contents:

Course Outline:

The course is concerned with books, both as carriers of information and as artistic objects. The basics of book design are provided. This includes editorial work, computer aided layout with the InDesign program and the

pre printing preparation of book documents. It covers the minimum polygraphic requirement for the choice

of reproductive technology and communication with printing companies, the basics of book binding, both classic and alternative. It is likewise concerned with graphics technology for work with photographic images.

The practical part runs in two direction: The creation of artists? books , that is an artifact either in the form

of classic book or in a form which falls outside this definition, The students? own photography and texts, either original or otherwise, are taken as the raw material.

The alternative direction is the creation of an advertising catalogue. Here emphasis is given to the simultaneous interaction of photographic and typographic elements. The solution of the final polygraphic product is likewise covered.

In both cases emphasis is given, above all, to an inventive approach and the creation of a concept of a book document.

Assignments: (assignment 3P5)

For the winter semester credit:

2/ Dummy of representative catalogue of the student?s own photographic creations, free choice of format

up to A4, 8 sides

Output requirements:

Layout print on inkjet printer, size 1:1, averse/reverse dummy

For the summer semester credit:

1/ Artists? book, making use of texts, either their own or others, up to format A3, minimal number of pages 16,

or dummy of advertising catalogue, format up to format A3 minimal number of pages 12.

Photographs, text and other graphic signs are considered to be equal partners from the creative point of view.

Theme of the book has to be decided about by the end of October within a brief written explanation specifying the theme together with the creative approach pertaining to it.

Output requirements:

Inkjet printed and professionally bound copy of the book as a final state of the work.
