Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students are introduced to curator's practice and archiving image material in a memorial institution.

The result will be an enriched document from the archive and collections objects in NTM management.

Course content: Introduction to photography archive and collection documentation. Excursion to the modern depository of NTM in a controlled environment. Exercise in basic preventive conservation and description of photographs according to archive standards and the standards of managing museum worthy pieces in a conservator's workshop.

Considering the operating hours of the depositary the module takes place in two parts on two consecutive Fridays.

The module takes place in the National Technical Museum depositary in Čelákovice. Considering the rules for protecting the collection it is necessary, at least a week prior to the first part to announce the participants - name and residence. Participants are first in the excursion introduced to the depository collection and archives in one of the most modern depositories. Then, they are introduced to methods of photography preventive conservation. They determine the physical state of the photographs, give their physical description and a description of the content. Example exercises take place using photograpy desks from the Poldi steelworks archive whicis is the research basis of the instructor's doctoral project and with photographs from the NTM Museum of Electronics and Media.

Petr Kliment was born in 1953 and graduated from FAMU, Artistic Photography studies. From 1983-1992 he was a curator in the photography and film technology dept. at National Technical Museum in Prague. In the following years he worked independently and dealt with, primarily, pre-print preparations. In1999 he worked as the lead of the photo dept. at the Jewish Museum in Prague. In 2003 he worked again at NTM as the head of the photography and film technology dept. From 2013 he has been the lead of the Czech Olympic Committee photography archive where he managed the Olympic multi-media library project focused on collecting and presenting image documentation of Czech sports. The project was co-financed with funds from the International Olympic Committee. In 2013 to 2016 he has lead the NTM national investigative team project Daguerrobase, co-financed by the European Commission. Currently he is a member of the investigative team „Historical Photography“ project, supported by the Czech Republic Ministry of Culture in the NAKI program. Petr Kliment is the curator of several permanent expositions focused on the history of photography and image media.
