Name of lecturer(s):
Martin STECKER
Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of this subject is to introduce the students with the physical rudiments of photography together with the applied exhibitions of specific tasks. The students will also learn how to use technical equipment of the Department of Photography, including the ways how to compare images processed by the analogue and digital technologies.

Mode of study:

On the practical examples students are taught how to realize assignments taking pictures of different surfaces with respect to the appropriate sharpness and lighting conditions with possibilities of Scheimpflug principle. Students also learn how to take pictures of geometric objects in the space with focus on differences in lighting ratios of main and additional light source, light measuring of the scene and taking care of the ranges of objects.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

There are no prerequisites or co-requisites needed for enrollment to this course.

Course contents:

1. Introductory technical exercise acquaintance with studio equipment.

The aim of this exercise is to acquire a basic knowledge for managing classic technology, introduction to photography processes, lighting objects of various materials.

a/ Daylight and artificial light, types of lights, basic priniciples, potential changes of light character and management. Advantages of individual systems. Basics of exponometry, photometric units, various types of measuring devices, their advantages, manner of measures and management, scene extent of brilliance, exponometric utilities.

b/ Basic types of photographic aparatus, their construction, advantages and use.

c/ lens construction and their faults, resolution, extreme potential of school lenses, field of view, spatial resolution.

Practical: group development of reproductions under glass with greyscale and couler tables - exampels of tranfer of clor to greyscale, determining the proper exposure and examples of manners of developing 6x9cm.

For submission: 1 enlargement 24x30cm on barite paper

Exercise: 1 photo on a digital camera, light and shadow, shadow composition plays a fundamental role in the shot.

2. Photography of the structure of a surface perfectly lit and focused on the entire surface checked using the Scheimpflug principles. Developing the film using a JOBO tank. This is on a Sinar large-format apparatus on a 9x12 cm cassette.

For submission: 1 enlargement 30x40cm on barite paper

3. Perspective and focal length, perpendicular alignment - restitution, establishing the lighting extent of the scene in the studio.

Practical:

1 photograph composition of a geometric object with a difference in the lighting of individual surfaces 1.5EV and precision use of alignment restitution. The shot completed with a Sinar 18x24cm

for submission:

1 contact sheet 18x24cm on barite paper

Exercise: 1 photograph of geometric objects on a digital photo apparatus. The principles from the previous shot may be violated / view, view without restitution, hard lighting without backlighting and similar according to the student's discretion.

4. 2 portraits on a large-format camera 18x24cm with flash and daylight and a developed meter enlargement from a selected negative.

for submission: 1 meter enlargement and 1 contact page 18x24cm on barite paper.

Exercise: 2 photographs on a digital apparatus - sharpness and blur in portrait photography / 1 shot blur optics, 1 shot moving blur.

Notes: Exercises on digital appratuses are always submitted the following after the assignment!
