Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is to introduce the radio medium and its individual components.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Active participation in lectures and excursions.

Course contents:

1. Lecture over the history of Czech Radio.

2. Lecture over the internal structure of radio and individual stations.

3. Excursions to selected radio workplaces including discussion with their employees.

4. How a news program is made and how to dispatch to direct input into broadcast. Sport newscasts. Sound examples.

5. Literary and drama creations. Examples of original radio play productions. A visit to a theatre recording and discussion with the director. A listening to the stereophonic recording „Let do nebezpečí“ and a chat with the soundmaster who implemented it.

6. The music industry in the radio studio and direct broadcast of concerts from other concert halls. Recording in original spaces. A visit to the R1 music studio. Chat with the studio. Production of large music pieces. The music director, sound master and recording technician functions.

7. Excursion to the Program directors' (ROP) workplace. Examples to experience the production and mixing of that semi-finished recording. Examples from sound archives and suppmentation of their content. Use of editing programs in that practice.

8. Dispatching programs from broadcast centers. Excursion to those centers. The announcer and moderator functions.

9. Equipment used in radio. Technology development from the nascent of radio in the Czech Republic up to today. Radio technology perspectives with the entrance of digitalization. Use of computer technology in radio. Archiving recordings and future trends. Recording exchange using the EBU network.

Recommended or required reading:

The lectures draw, among others, from Czech Radio documentary archives. They are supplemented with historic photographs and sound examples from sound cylinder, grammophone disk and cassette recordings.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded for attendance in instruction and an oral verification of knowledge of material covered.
