Learning outcomes of the course unit:

An understanding of the fundamental principles of building a gag in film and theatre from the simple to the well-structured.

Mode of study:

Intensive instruction in a module taking place a UVS Poněšice. Practical experience in building gags is part of the instruction.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

This course is intended for all students who have at least simple directorial or acting experience in filmo or theatre.

Group maximum is 15 students.

Course contents:

The Gag is one of the fundamental expression elements of animated film. This instruction module covers the theory and implementation of a gag.

The analysis and structure of a gag is the subject, based on theory information about gagmen steps in several film forms, guides the student in their own experience with visual comedy.

Outline:

The golden eara of American silent film grotesque

A sense of the funny in reality

Concept of the Gag and its forms

Gagmen and actors

Analysis of the grotesque of the most significant comics

Development of comic forms during the entire history of film

Originality in interpretation

Gag capacity and its ability corresponding to the time spent

- practical camera exercises in front of and behind the camera

- script structured gag

TWO COSTUMES for:

Good guy and bad guy

These are improvised costumes. Do not buy anything special. Do not rent any carneval costumes but bring things you find, can dig up or get hold of.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Evaluation criteria are originaltiy, accuracy, creativity and intuition.

Group of 15 students max. This will be an adventurous journey into the depths of visual comedy from when it was the real king of film and though to surrealistic humor.

Come and see that the work of a gagman is an anarchistically simple and loaded with joy and great potential for entertaining a wide audience.
