DIRECTING and SCREENWRITING specialization

Directing students should be able to demonstrate their ability to create an engaging and understandable short film that will attest to their ability to work on larger films in the future. As with film directors in the working world, directing students should be able to properly complete tasks on time, to make proper pragmatic judgments regarding realization of their ideas (including compromises), and to appropriately manage the time of their co-workers, both in pre-production and on-set, in order to be primary motivator of their projects.

Before the realization of this project, directing students are expected to understand editing technology, and the basics of film language to a satisfactory extent, so that their time in the editing room can be employed for more in-depth and exploratory decisions.

Collaborating cinematography students will learn to load and operate 16mm (Super16mm) cameras, and to employ a standard lens package, in primarily natural light conditions. Working from a transfer to DVCam technology, cinematography students will develop their skills in digital postproduction to create an appropriate visual atmosphere that will augment the goals of the director.

CINEMATOGRAPHY specialization

The primary purpose of this project is to display the camera skills of the student. Cinematography students will learn to load and operate 35mm camera and to employ a standard lens package in natural light conditions. Cinematography students are expected to work both as Director of Photography and Camera Operator. They should also work as Camera ssistants on the projects of their classmates.

Working from a transfer to DVCAM technology, students will develop their skills in digital postproduction and color grading to enhance the visual atmosphere.

DIRECTING specialization

Based on an original script developed in their workshop, students of directing, together with cinematography students will create a 6 to 8 minute narrative film. This cinematic story should reflect the emerging individual style of the director, while also demonstrating an ability to work with actors, and to tell a dramatic and coherent story primarily through visual means.

CINEMATOGRAPHY specialization

Based on an original script, students of cinematography will create a simple 3 to 5 minute 35mm film shot on a predetermined exterior location that will be

selected by their workshop mentors. In this film the students should create either a dreamlike narrative story or visually evocative, theme-based story. In either case, the film has to have a consistent atmosphere of a dream.

Cinematography students may either direct this project, or select a directing student from Academy Program as a collaborator on this film.

The same as Directing, shot on video.
