This course is focused on history of Czech postwar cinema, with particular attention paid to the New Wave. Students will acquire knowledge of most significant Czech (and Slovak) filmmakers who have contributed to the most successful and acclaimed period in the Czech film history so far. The ability of understanding this particular period in history of Czech cinema and culture will help students to identify their own creative approach or style.

The course offers rather complex view over the cinematic, cultural, social, and political contexts. Each class consists of lecture and screening ? either an entire film or clips from various films.
- Canon in film history: fiction, documentary, animation, experimental cinema, and beyond?
- Czech Cinema before WW2: art, culture, industry, politics
- Barrandov as a state-owned Film Studio
- Fathers and enfants terribles as auteurs
- Style, norm, genre, mission
- Věra Chytilová: the first (and only?) lady
- Jan Němec: darkness and silence
- Miloš Forman: a very extra/ordinary hero
- Jiří Menzel: story as an ornament
- Evald Schorm: conscience as the undercurrent
- Jaromil Jireš: Documentary and/as Fiction

Attendance: Students are allowed to have two absences. Barring unforeseen circumstances, students should notify the instructor in advance. Exceptional circumstances will be considered, but additional work will be required.
Participation: Students will be expected to contribute to in-class discussions. Each student needs to prepare a brief research-based report once per semester.
Completion policy: To complete the course, a student must comply with the attendance and participation requirements and write a 2-3 pages-long paper on a topic approved by the instructor ahead of time.
