Basic theory of narrative with an overview of literary tradition. Course focuses on narration as traditional and fundamental activity of humans. From origin of myth and religious rituals to emerging of oral and later graphic form, to drama and literature and of course film. The long tradition of narrative is examined in its development, changes, developments and steps.
The course features a specific attention of classic masterpieces in literature and drama as well as reading of Shakespeare’s classics such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet.

Class is divided in two parts: general theory of narration and narrative and overview with examples detailed in history of dramaturgy and literature. Major examples from Homer to Shakespeare to Dostoyevsky, Proust, and the moderns. Narrative form, from oral, to legend, origin of novel, poetry, contemporary literature and the relationship with film.

Students choose one major drama from Shakespeare and at least two classic novels for a discussion during the oral exam.
