Learning outcomes of the course unit:

At the end of this course you will be able to understand which projects are being prepared at the master program of Cinema and Dital Media and be able to decide on which projects to collaborate either as director of photography, editor or sound designer.

The seminar will be held in English. No special skills expected.

Course contents:

Students from Cinema and Digital Media Program 1st, 2nd and 3rd year (FAMU International dept) will present their projects for spring semester 2017.

Since 2008 has FAMU opened Cinema and Digital Media master program for 3 years, with concentrations in screenwriting and directing. The three-year follow-up Master´s degree program (Cinema and DSigital media Program) is an intensive hands-on and theoretical preparation from the very beginning. Students work with a HDV, HDSLR and other digital formats while adopting a professional approach to the 16mm and 35mm film formats both on location and in the studio.

As there is rarely a joint study plan for Czech and English speaking students of FAMU, this is an attempt to make them meet at one seminar, where spring assignments will be presented by students of master program in directing from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year.

Students of 1st year will present Triangle:

Directing students write and direct short film up to 8 minutes based on realistic dramatic situation, which should develop at least among three characters. Any stylistic approach possible, however, students are asked to avoid schematic characters like beggars, pickpockets, puppeteers and street artists. Definition of the exercise: Joint exercise between Master degree student of Cinematography and FAMU International Cinema and Digital Media directing student (1st year) Script: based on script developed by directing student within the CDM directing tutorial. Digital editing.

Students of 2nd year will present Short Fiction:

Directing students write and direct short film up to 15 minutes. Students are lead in their tutorial to develop short fiction, based on the story, developed by the student and their schoolmates or taken from literature. There is no style limit, except of avoiding non-narrative approach. The artistic initiative comes from Directing student who actively searches for collaborating Cinematography student. Definition of the exercise: Joint exercise between Master degree student of Cinematography and FAMU International Cinema and Digital Media directing student (2nd year). Script: based on script developed by directing student within the CDM directing tutorial. Digital editing.

Students of 3rd year will present Graduate project:

Directing students write and direct short film up to 25 minutes. Students are lead in their tutorial to develop short fiction, based on the story, developed by the student or taken from literature. Student can shoot adaptation or shoot existing screenplay of student of screenwriting master program. There is no style limit, except of avoiding non-narrative approach. The artistic initiative comes from Directing student who actively searches for collaborating Cinematography student.

All together 9 projects will be pitched. Each pitch will take app 20 min.
