Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Alumni and graduate students of Cinema and Digital media program will share workflow applied when shooting their graduate projects. Examples of coproduction (Estonia), shooting abroad (Ukraine) will be part of the seminar.

At the end of this course you will be able to understand what are the traps of a graduate project, what to be aware of before you start working on your script. When to start with preproduction and preparation of your shoot and what is waiting for you once the shooting is over.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No special skills expected, just be on time and ready to learn something new. Background in directing and production is expected.

Course contents:

Seminar divided into two parts will introduce 4 former students of Cinema and Digital media program and their graduate projects. Each presenter will screen her/his graduate film. Screening of each film will be followed by case study of a shooting. e.g. What problems during preproduction, production and postproduction they were facing. Differences between the original idea/script and final product/film.

Film crew - when to start finding your crew, when its too late.

Equipment - advantage/ disadvantages of shooting with minimum gear.

Coproduction - what are the advantages and disadvantages of shooting in your mother land or abroad?

Budget and its preparation / what were weak parts of the budget. How much did students invest into graduate film above the provided budget and what were the reasons?

Set - Preparation of shooting schedule, story boards,what were the most common problems on set?

Data workflow.

Postproduction budget.

Distribution and producer - advice on distribution and finding a producer (not production manager) to help you with your projects after school - e.g. workshops, work in progress workshops, festivals where to apply....
