1) Reading of the required literature, i.e. David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson's Dějiny Filmu, NAMU+NLN Praha 2007. (FAMU students have the opportunity to buy the book, as limited supplies last, at the FAMU Library with a discount). It is sufficient to read only those parts of the book which cover similar topics covered in lectures in a semester. General supplementary literature for lectures: (among others: D'Agostini, Paolo: Legendání Filmy, Praha 1989: Sova, Dawn B. Zakázané Filmy, Praha 2005: Torterberg, Michael (ed.), Lexikon Světového filmu, Praha - Litvínov 2005); Supplementary literature for individual lectures may largely be found on the syllabi on CAS webpages. (Supplementary literature in not compulsory - it is only to serve to assist in future study.)

2.) Viewing required films

An inseparable part of the lecture material is viewing two to three required films of at least one will be screened at the school in lecture. Others must be viewed privately by the students. In exception will films be viewed during lecture.

All required films are available on VHS or DVD in the FAMU videolibrary.

We warn that part of the exam is in confirming knowledge of the required films and their contextual interpretation.

3) Knowledge of the lecture material.

Course contents:

A two-semester survey lecture shared by 3rd-year FAMU students with 1st cycle Charles University Faculty of Philosophy, Film Studies, Film research students. The lecture will cover the period from the beginning of cinema to 1960 and provides students with a relatively comprehensive, of course only in an outline, the development of the entire cinema profession in the Czech lands and Slovakia. Along with aspects in the professionalization of the trade and gradual artistic maturing (particularly in feature film) and the function of Czech film in individual periods and the contact of film with literature and theatre and traditional arts, the subject of lectures are changes in the status of cinema in economic and political life in the first and second republics and during the protectorate as well as the nationalization of the profession in 1945. It is a three-hour lecture in which there will be the screening of at least one feature-length film.

The history of Czech cinema l and ll are survey lectures introducing students to comprehensive issues connected with the development of film in the Czech lands from the 1890s to 1960. It is also devoted to the birth of the domestic film industry, changes in the relationship of cinematography and the state, institutionalization process, development of genres in cultural-historical contexts, key figures of Czech film and the birth of the domestic star system. Partiicular attention is devoted to the nationalization of cinematography and the role of Communist Party Central Committee.

A two-semester lecture course for third-year FAMU students combined with first-year students in film studies in the Department of Film Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. The lectures will cover the period from the origin of cinema up to 1960 and will provide students with a general but complex overview of the history of the development of cinema in the Czech lands and Slovakia. The course will look at the processes of the field's professionalisation and its gradual aesthetic maturity (especially in the sphere of narrative film), will examine the social function of Czech film at individual periods in history and the context between film and literature and film and theatre and or the relationship between film and traditional artistic fields in general, and will also focus on the changing status of cinema in the economic and political life of the first and second republics, during Nazi occupation, and after the nationalisation of the industry in 1945. This is a three-hour lecture followed by a screening of at least one feature-length film.
