Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the lecture series and screenings is, in the three semesters, to provide a basic knowledge of the development of world cinema from its prehistory to the 1980s, particularly regarding the most important types, genres, currents, styles and figures in the entirety of cinema. This includes political, economic and artistic contexts, audience lifestyle, etc. The lectures and screenings are the foundation of knowledge necessary for a better understanding of the related specialized lectures

Mode of study:

Lecture supplemented by film samples and study projects.

Information from lecture is supplemented by study of presented literature and individual „close reading“ of recommended films.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Knowledge of the history of world cinema up to 1945, general knowledge of world literature, fine arts, photography and world history. Knowledge of English as well.

Course contents:

Třísemestrální přednáška dějin světového filmu je pojata jako komplexní seznámení s dějinami světového filmu pro studenty prvního a druhého ročníku. Přednáška se snaží v souladu s tzv. novou filmovou historií studenty obeznámit nejen s estetickou a biografickou rovinou dějin kinematografie (umělecky důležití tvůrci a směry, jejich vzájemné vztahy, návaznosti na jiné umělecké druhy atd.), ale také se společensko-kulturním, ekonomickým a institucionálním dipozitivem, který kinematografii té které doby do značné míry determinuje a který je jí naopak zpětně ovlivňován. Kurz je doplněn pravidelnými projekcemi vybraných filmů.

Předpoklady zdárného absolvování kurzu:

1) přečtení povinné literatury

2) zhlédnutí povinných filmů

Nedílnou součástí látky odpřednášené v rámci každé přednášky je zhlédnutí dvou až tří povinných filmů, přičemž alespoň jeden bude promítán ve škole v rámci přednášky, na další se pak musejí studenti podívat sami. S výjimkou některých filmů promítaných během přednášek

jsou všechny povinné filmy přístupny na vhs či dvd ve videotéce FAMU.

Upozorňujeme, že součástí zkoušky je i prověření znalosti povinných filmů

a jejich kontextuální interpretace.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Each (of the three) semesters in the series is concluded with an oral exam in which one of the fundamental topics is tested. The second is supplementary and the third is about a film. (execept in very exceptional and significant cases, knowledge of the exact year of production of a film or phenomenon will not be required: +/- 5 year precision is sufficient, ex; half of the 20s, turn of the 40s to 50s, beginning of the 60s, etc.)

Attendance is a requirement for grading - attendance at screenings is required - 3 absences are allowed.
