Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The lecture series is designed as an introduction to key topics in the history of European visual culture. In this is a focus on and explanation of extra-arts contexts of visual arts. Lectures, also, present studies of humans and culture, primarily cultural, social, historical and visual anthropology, cultural ecology, contemporary cultural historiography and visual studies.

Course contents:

1. Arts and culture. Visual culture. Arts-extra-arts. Visualization. Status and potential recognition of visual culture

2. Tangible and social environments. The city as an complex cultural phenomenon. Backdrop of the perception of a city. The city and visual experience.

3. Natural and artificial places. Proto-architecture and the birth of architecture.

4. Internal and external. Walls and gates, borders and axes.

5. Labyrinths and nets

6. Principle of an acropolis. Vertical hierarchy in the structure of a city and its significance.

7. Principle of an agora. - Horizontal hierarchy in the structure of a city and its significance.

8. The Acropolis and the Agora. Rise of public spaces

9. Private and public in a city. Outline of the development of public space.

10. The city and country. An image of the development of the relation of man to nature in visual culture I.

11. Country settlements and landscapes. An image of the relation of man to nature in visual culture II.

12. Sacred and profane in the city and in the country.

13. The city as a utopia. Concept of paradise.

Assessment methods and criteria:

The student upon agreement of the instructor selects elements of visual culture and available literature and other resources for reconstrution of its history. Credit is awarded for the written project, specifying the selected topic and containing a basic bibliography for development, specific sources of image material and an outline of the collection structure which is submitted at the exam in the following semester (Facts and Contexts of Visual Culture II).
