Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The lecture series is designed as an introduction to key topics in the history of European visual culture. In this is a focus on and explanation of extra-arts contexts of visual arts. Lectures, also, present studies of humans and culture, primarily cultural, social, historical and visual anthropology, cultural ecology, contemporary cultural historiography and visual studies.

Mode of study:

Interactive lecture and presentation of visual material.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

This course is intended for students who have completed Facts and Contexts of Visual Culture 1.

Course contents:

1. Residence as the key to an environment. Pivotal topics of housing. Prinicple of domus and principle of insula

2. Home/flat as a reflection of the world. Home/flat and family. Functional and important content of domesticity. Elements of a residential environment.

3. Outline of the development of selected types of residential architecture.

4. Outline of the history of heating, lighting, water delivery and waste.

5. Outline of the history of plumbing fixtures.

6. Outline of the history of food, gastronomic culture and dining

7. The body and carnality as a topic of visual culture. Key issues and development. Nudity in everyday and in visual culture. Sexuality and visual culture.

8. Clothing and body modifications. Outline of development I.

9. Clothing and body modifications. Outline of development II.

10. Death and mortality as a fudamental cultural topic. Cultural history of death. Birth and death in visual culture

11. History of burying. Funeral ceremonies and their contexts

12. Movement in a space and visual culture.

13. Communication and visual culture. Relations of visual communication to graphic arts.

Assessment methods and criteria:

The student upon agreement of the instructor selects elements of visual culture and available literature and other resources for reconstrution of its history. Image documentation is collected and developed in order to correspond to the historical development of the element selected and is accompanied by a verbal commentary which captures the bases of that development. The oral exam contains both a presentation of the results of that task and checks the student bearing in visual culture.
