Learning outcomes of the course unit:

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the development of computer games through a theory and practical path, from AAA games to casual games. This covers programming, game design and team management issues. The students attempt to create one small casual game.

Mode of study:

This course takes place in a series of lectures and group work on the development of a casual play in small student teams.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Those interested in the course need not have any previous knowledge (it is not necesary to know how to program). A knowledge of English is necessary.

Course contents:

A course instructed by Otakar Nieder (Bohemia Interactive Simulations), Martin Klíma (Warhorse Studios), Milena Koljenšič (DIVR Labs), Jakub Gemrot and Cyril Brom (MFF UK) and guests, provides a comprehensive overview of the development of computer games. Helena Bendova is the coordinator for FAMU, who will register the grades into the KOS system). In the practical the students will propose and creat a small casual game in teams of 3-4 people. Each team will have their own mentor from a number of game professionals. The theory section will include programming (various hardware platforms, script languages, etc.), but also the use of computer graphics in games, game design, project management and game marketing. The course is open to those interested from various schools (MFF UK, FF UK, FAMU, VŠUP, ČVUT) and depts. Because of this the students may select lectures.

The aim of the practical will be to develop a small casual game on an assigned topic, which might be succesful in competition with the real widely-distributed casual games or at international competitions. Small grants may be awarded for game creation. Student teams will be inter-disciplinary, as are inter-disciplinary teams which actually develop computer games. We will endeavor that each team will have representatives from key professions: programmer, designer and graphics artist. Student teams will be formed in Octorber 2014 - it is your responsibility to join one of the teams(!). We would like that the proposal includes the ideas of all members of the team. No one in the team is to function as a „hired hand.“ The search for team members takes place here: https:/www.facebook.com/gamedev.cuni.cz and in mail conferences.

Attendance at the first lecture 7.10. from 9:00-11:00 in classroom S4 at MFF UK (Malostranské náměstí 25) is obligatory!

Instruction will take place in blocks at the Mathematics-Physics Faculty of Charles University (Malostranské náměstí 25) in room S4 on Fridays from 9:00 to at least 12:00, sometimes longer. Most of the course will be in English.

Assessment methods and criteria:
