Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is to:

- adopt basic publishing skills and know publishing standards;

- acquire a basic bearing in manners of evaluating and financing sciences and research, adopt skills in writing grant requests;

- become acquainted with opportunities for presenting one's research at professional conferences, acquire practice in the preparation and presentation of conference contributions.

Mode of study:

A one-semester elective course (4 instruction hours 1x every 14 days) arranged by the AMU Center for Doctoral Studies and concluded with an exam.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

This course is intended primarily for doctoral study students> If there are free spaces, it is also open to Master's studies students.

Course contents:

17. 2. Lecturer: Jan Jiřík (DAMU)

Lecture: Developing research. Use of field manual and encyclopedia, basic catalogs of foreign libraries (Library of Congress), JIB, focusing on the resources of Prague libraries, MMVS, open sources. Electronic information databases in Prague Institutions and at AMU (EBSCO, JSTOR). Procedures in limiting a topic appropriate for research, selection of key words, narrowing of topic.

Class: Investigating topics linked to students' doctoral projects (resp. dissertation, class, etc. papers), which are appropriate for development of a conference contribution / conference contribution catalog.

Task 4: Refining the topic found in class and developing into a research topic. Developing an abstract of the intended conference contribution / professional article.

3.3. Lecturer: Tomáš Dvořák (FAMU)

Lecture: Structure of a professional study, state of the art development, working with sources, citation standards. Citations, paraphrasing, summarizing. Citation standards and treatments by individual publishers. Citation manual.

Class: Discussion on developed research and submitted abstracts.

Task 5: To develop the conference contribution / conference catalog contribution on the topic selected at the course introduction (Extent 7 standard pages).

Lecture: Evaluation and financing of science and research in the Czech Republic. It's impact on writer's home institution. Potential grant support for doctoral work.

Class: Preparing a grant request for SGS AMU.

Task 6: Completing the SGS AMU grant request for the students' doctoral research topic.

Class: Discussions on the first version of students' conference contribution.

Class: Meeting with review magazine chief editors.

Class: Discussion on developed SGS AMU grant requests.

5. 5. Closing group meeting and discussion on students' completed conference contribution, evaluation, grading.

Assessment methods and criteria:

To sit the exam, one must complete 3 assignments in the Winter semester and submit 3 assignments in the Summer semester: Research + conference abstract, grant request for SGS AMU, conference contribution for "Teritoria Umeni 2017 or a professional article. Class participation and 80% attendance is required.
