Field of study characterization

Oboe is a practically oriented field focusing on the study and systematic mastery of oboe instructional and elocutionary literature.

The instruction develops and perfects the student's knowledge acquired during previous studies, primarily at conservatories. This applies to the area of methodological approaches as well as to the student's own interpretive activity.

As part of the instruction, it is expected that all students will be significantly involved in the school's concert activities in chamber ensembles, orchestras and solo performances. The historical repertoire tradition of wind instruments involves small formations composed of the school's students, who can actively co-create the artistic character and impact of major concerts. Matriculations, graduations, the conferring of honorary doctorates, etc. are accompanied by concert performances and ceremonial music spanning four centuries and all stylistic periods.

Key learning outcomes:

Students will be gradually familiarised with the knowledge and skills required for subsequent artistic and pedagogical practice.

Graduates must demonstrate knowledge of the basic world repertoire, which is expanded to the area of New Music and other modifications of contemporary music. In the area of pedagogical work, the graduate must have mastered the methods of playing the instrument, pedagogical approaches and outputs, and dramaturgical and publishing erudition. Another important component is knowledge of the issue of producing a oboe?s mechanical components.

Communication and language skills are essential aspects of a graduate?s preparation.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

Current practice requires a broad range of styles and genres. Graduates apply their skills in orchestral playing, chamber playing and soloist activity, as well as in pedagogical work in primary and secondary education.

Access to further studies:

The continuing Master?s programme in Oboe at the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (HAMU), programmes in the arts or education faculties of other universities.

An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subject. Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“. In the main subjects, examinations are administered by a commission.

At the end of the first year, students undergo an examination before the Dean?s College, where they demonstrate their abilities to master the study programme in all its breadth.
