Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Knowledge of methods and methodological procedures in the instruction of classical dance technique at he basic (beginner) level of instruction of common curricula in a system of instruction and study at dance conservatories but also in other types of institutions (ex: Elementary Arts Schools, Private schools, hobby study, courses). Methodic analysis and practice of individual elements. Creation of simple combinations.

Mode of study:

This course is intended for Classical Dance training students. It contains a detailled analysis of the elements of Classical Dance Technique of the 2nd year of an eight year Dance conservatory. The instruction starts with the Agrippina Vaganova system which is an integrated method enabling the development of the physical talents and basic knowledge of the movement vocabulary of classical dance.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Good posture, basic exercises a la barre and au millieu in context of the begining levell of instruction. Good ability to explain, instruct and correct mistakes in selected elements of classical dance and it's combinations in simple phrases.

Course contents:

The instruction originates in the Agrppina Vaganova system which is a comprehensive methods enabling the development of the physical talent and basic knowledge of the movement vocabulary of classical dance. It provides for the mastery of all knowledge about the arrangement of combinations of all elements according to method rules. In the works of A. Vaganova we find the main basis of the method of classical dance technique.

This instruction program of all exercises counts on the instruction of education principles of developing the physical disposition, and applying a regime of stress, a system of habitual repetition, maximum mental concentration and an understanding of the material in the future dancer. Students learn detailed and effective explications of each element and how to prevent errors in their execution.

a la barre: large and small poses: Croiseé, effacée, écartée forward and back, 2nd arabesque en pointe to the floor on the tense leg and it demi-plié. Battement tendus, battements jetés: a/ balancoir b/ in all small and large poses, Demi-rond de jambe at 45 en dehors and en dedans, on the whole food and demi-point, Rond de jambe at 45, en dehors and en dedans on the whole foot, Battements fondus, Battement soutenu, Battement frappé in all directions in demi-point, Battement double frappé in all directions and demi-point, Petits battements sur le cou- de- pied demi-point, Flic forward and back on the whole foot and with raised to demi-point, Pas tombé in place, Pas coupé whole foot and demi-point, Rond de jambe en l´air en dehors a en dedans demi-point, Temps relevé na 45 en dehors a en dedans, Battements relevés lent at 90 and battements développés, Demi- rond de jambe a grand rond de jambe at 90, Grands battements jetés, Relevés demi-point, Turns at the barre and away from the barre, fouetté en dehors a en dedans, Soutenu en tournant en dehors a en dedans, half-turns on one leg.

au millieu: Exercises are practiced en face and v épaulement whole foot - large and small poses and additional exercises gradually transferred from exercises at the barre.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on:

participation in exercises and class

completion of the semester paper

During the course independent reading, participation in class discussions, which is a condition for credit are required. The exam is written and oral. The overall grading is comprised of 60% for class participation, 20% for the written and 20% for the oral parts of the exam.
