Learning outcomes of the course unit:

1. Introduction to basic theatre theory.

2. To introduce issues of domestic and foreign theatre - theory terminology, primarily the issues of terminology, focues on the creation of a theatre piece.

3. To introduce the principles of the function of a theatre piece and its components.

Mode of study:

Concept presentation, discussion, reading and analysis of theory texts, recording analyses.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No knowledge requirement for this course.

Course contents:

1. Theatre semiotics

2. Terminology of Zich's aesthetics of drama arts.

3. Components of a theatre piece (visual, acoustic, acting and audience)

4. Components of a theatre piece (dramaturgy, directing, acting, visual - graphic, acoustic, in certain types of theatre also the literary).

5. A comparison of various theory approaches and theatre studies concepts with a focus on the creation of a theatre piece.

The noetic principle in theatre arts

General glimpse into arts theory - theatre in the time of mass media, virtuality and simulators; the boarders representation

E. Bullough and the psychical distance, A.C. Danto and the end of art, Didi-Huberman and an anachronic history of art and others.

Further analysis of Magritt's painting „This is not a Pipe“ with references to the interpreation of M. Foucault. Analysis of Borges story. Author of Don Quijote, Pierre Menard and others.

A structural-semiotic analysis of a theatre piee (discussion on the significance of the concept from a perspective of contemporary thought on theatre, and not merely a definintion in terms.

Structuralism and Semiotics; symbol and significance of a symbol; the acting component - actor, character, drama figure; acting component of puppet theatre - stage figure. Important presentation techniques and depictions; originality V. original symbol in an example comparing theatre and film. Intention and unintention, respectively, semiotic and non-semiotic perception, ostensity, opus V. artefact V. work of art.

J. Etlik and theatre as experience, 1st section; O. Zich - aesthetics of dramatic arts, further J. Císař, I. Osolsobě, Z. Hořínek, M. Česal, M. Pšenička and others.

Emphasis on the Czech school, but parallel comparison with western terminology and considerations of theatre (M. Hermann, or coordinates in the context of theatre - An anthology of contemporary theatre theory.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Grades and credit are awarded based on a minimum of 80% attendance at lectures which is a condition for sitting the exam. The grading takes place at the end of the lecture series as a verbal or possibly written exam.
