- Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is to introduce the basic principles of theatre translation for directing, dramaturgy, theory and critique students whose specialization is neither, philology, nor translation, but neverthe less will, in the future, work with translated texts. Students are to become acquainted with some aspects of general translation theory and important periods and figures in Czech translations. An inseparable part of the practical is the comparison of existing translations and one's - group or individual - translation attempts.

Comparison of existing translations, group translating, comparison and assessment of one's own translation.
- Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Konwledge of a foreign language at least at the maturity level (English, French, German, Russian) is required.
- Course contents:

Theoretical aspects:
1. Theory of translation and translating practice.
2. Czech as a target language in relation to languages of originals.
3. Specific features of theatrical translations.
4. Verbal action and linguistic stylization.
5. The problems of translating verse and translating from various systems of versification.
Practical part:
1. Comparison of existing Czech translations of one original (prose, rhythmicized prose, verse).
2. Work on students' own translations.

- Assessment methods and criteria:

- Class attendance (2 absences tolerated per semester);
- on-going translation preparations of assigned texts;
- partial class work: written comparison of two (or more) translations of the same foreign language basis;
- final semester paper: a translation of an compact excerpt from a selected text.
